Merry Christmas!

Our final blog of 2020 is a festive one. We have searched our collections to find objects and images to help spread some much needed festive cheer. Merry Christmas everyone!

A sign of the 1960s times….

We start with one of the more obscure objects from Experience Barnsley. This advertisement for “a great little gift” was displayed in a Barnsley shop in the 1960s, how times have changed! Big changes have been made to the galleries at Experience Barnsley and although this hasn’t been added to the galleries 100s more items have. We can’t wait to welcome you back when it is safe to do so in 2021!

‘Partridges in the Snow’ by John Christopher Bell

Not only has this beautiful painting been turned into a digital jigsaw (visit The Cooper Gallery on Facebook and Twitter to play along) This John Christopher Bell painting was also the inspiration for a new artwork:

The Cooper Gallery – Winter Windowland

The Cooper Gallery is part of this years Bright Nights ‘Winter Windowland’ The front of the gallery will be lit up everyday between 4pm-10pm until 10 January. Visit the Barnsley Council’s website to read more about this years Bright Nights https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/events/

Co-op Wrapping Paper

The Barnsley British Co-operative Society was once at the heart of the community. Lots of people still have fond memories of the shops which used to have a very popular santa’s grotto every Christmas…

santa’s grottos was one of the fond memories shared in our recent virtual coffee morning. Butterfields and Massies on Church Street was also well known for its magical grotto. You can listen to more memories from our virtual coffee morning in this podcast episode.
